The Social City
Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, oh my!
Social media is becoming a more and more integral part of daily life, providing an easy (and free) forum for conversation and information sharing.
Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, YouTube, etc. are the perfect platforms to engage residents. These platforms allow you to ask questions and receive feedback, share insights about the way the city functions, and quickly disseminate information when disaster strikes.
But getting online can be tricky. Accounts have to be created, guidelines set, and a substantial learning curve overcome. The Social City is a city’s guide to social media. It not only provides instructions of how to get setup on the various platforms but provides simple guidelines on how best to use each platform and innovate strategies to try out.
The guide started out as a collaboration between Code for America and the City & County of Honolulu. It’s now generalized for any city, and is open source.
