Code for America Statement on Implementation of Automatic Record Clearance Law in Connecticut
Code for America’s Clear My Record Program Director Alia Toran-Burell issued the following statement after the Connecticut Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection resumed implementation of its Clean Slate law, which Governor Ned Lamont signed in 2021:
“For the nearly 119,000 people in Connecticut who are eligible to have a criminal record cleared, this marks the beginning of a much-awaited new chapter. Having advised the state’s leaders on Clean Slate policy prior to its passage, Code for America is pleased to now witness Connecticut enter this next phase in the automatic record clearance process.
“While technical challenges arose that led to a delay of implementation, Code for America’s Clear My Record team applauds Connecticut’s effort to overcome these barriers, along with state coalitions who showed deep dedication to ensuring record relief was delivered to those who were eligible. We remain committed to helping mitigate such challenges in other states working to implement Clean Slate laws.
“Connecticut now joins the growing cohort of states in which the government clears eligible criminal records automatically rather than requiring individuals to complete the complicated, costly process of petitioning to have their records cleared. In moving forward with making automatic record clearance a reality, Connecticut will open doors to jobs, housing, and education, which will benefit not only individuals and their families but also communities statewide.”
