Code for America Statement on Clean Slate Law in Missouri
Code for America’s Criminal Justice Program Director Alia Toran-Burrell issued the following statement after Missouri Gov. Mike Kehoe signed the state’s Clean Slate bill into law:
“Automatic record sealing will open doors to employment, education, housing, and more for Missourians who have a past criminal record. Individuals, families, and entire communities across Missouri will have a better outlook from this day forward because of Clean Slate legislation. This change in the law will manifest as a positive change in their lives.
“Missouri’s automatic record sealing law is a victory not only for the state but also for the entire Clean Slate movement. As of now, 14 states and the District of Columbia have passed automatic record sealing laws, eliminating old criminal records from background checks so that people can move forward without the burden of their criminal history. This progress is a testament to a growing commitment and fundamental belief that no one should be blocked from sealing an eligible record by complex or unnecessary administrative hurdles.
“Code for America is proud to have worked with lawmakers and advocates in crafting an automatic record sealing bill in Missouri, ultimately setting the foundation for a technically feasible, easily implementable law. We look forward to continuing our effort to make state-initiated record sealing possible across the country through the mindful use of technology.”
