Code for America Partners with State of Maryland to Launch Mobile-Friendly Integrated Benefits Application
OAKLAND, CA, July 23, 2025 – Code for America—the leading civic tech nonprofit that’s making public services easier to navigate through technology—has partnered with Maryland’s Departments of Information Technology, Health, and Human Services to launch a new, mobile-friendly integrated benefits application that streamlines the delivery of critical government services to eligible Marylanders.
The tool, called Maryland Benefits One Application, combines multiple applications for food and cash assistance, healthcare, and other basic needs into one online application, is available in English and Spanish, and is accessible via desktop computer and smartphone. Now, Marylanders can simultaneously apply for non-MAGI Medicaid, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Women, Infants, Children (WIC) programming, and energy assistance.
“Today marks a significant step forward for Maryland and for those who believe in a government that is efficient, effective, and empathetic,” said Code for America CEO Amanda Renteria. “This new tool will help more Maryland families get back on their feet by making it easier to put food on the table and access critical services like health care. Across the country, states are showing what’s possible when we use human-centered design and technology to meet people where they are. We are proud to work alongside Maryland and all of our government partners to transform America’s safety net and make public benefits more accessible and effective for all.”
Through this launch, the state of Maryland has cut application completion time by more than half while integrating additional benefits. Maryland and Code for America will work to further reduce the time it takes to apply for critical benefits. To date, more than 22,000 people have already used the tool.
“Partnerships like ours with Code for America make it possible to ensure that Marylanders can access the basic services they need,” said Gov. Moore. “The One Application ensures the people of our state can apply for food, cash, and emergency assistance through a single, accessible one-stop shop. At a time when the federal government is walking back support for veterans, seniors, disabled residents, and working families, Maryland is proving there’s a better way.”
In 2023, Maryland joined Code for America’s Safety Net Innovation Lab as part of a second cohort of states with a focus on integrated benefits delivery. The Innovation Lab is a groundbreaking, multi-year initiative to transform America’s safety net by partnering with 15 states to unlock $30 billion in benefits across food assistance, health care, and other basic needs for 13 million people. To do this, the Innovation Lab works shoulder-to-shoulder with state partners to uncover the most promising opportunities, design human-centered tools and technologies, and, ultimately, deliver scalable solutions. The cohort model provides the additional benefit of peer learning for state partners.
