About the program

For over a decade, Code for America fellowships paired civic-minded technologists with local governments to help them better serve their communities.

The original Code for America fellowship program brought technical expertise to local governments in order to help them break through some of their toughest challenges. Fellows brought skills like software development, UX design, and product management into government operations. They worked with government staff and community stakeholders to design, prototype, and implement digital solutions to civic challenges.

The community fellowship program recruited community-based technologists with lived experience, partnering them with their local government to address inequities in service delivery. By resourcing and training those closest to the problem with the skills they need to make change in government, we proved we can effectively close gaps in service delivery while keeping an eye towards justice.

The legacy of Code for America’s fellowship programs lives on today throughout the civic tech ecosystem, and we celebrate the dozens of fellowship and volunteer opportunities that are putting tech talent to use meeting government’s most critical needs.
