GetYourRefund Opens for 2024 Tax Filing Season

GetYourRefund, Code for America’s free virtual tax filing service, opens today for its fifth tax filing season. GetYourRefund is supported by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and offered in partnership with Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) organizations across the country. The service is a digital front door to high quality, trustworthy, free tax filing assistance for households with low to moderate income. 

In addition to their current 2023 taxes, filers can complete past year returns for 2020, 2021, or 2022. GetYourRefund can help individuals and families claim critical benefits for which they are eligible, such as the Child Tax Credit and the Earned Income Tax Credit.

Tax benefits are an important source of flexible cash—money that individuals and families decide how to spend for themselves—which helps people provide for their basic needs, find and keep living wage jobs, and handle unexpected emergencies. 

At the core of GetYourRefund’s success are VITA partners, community-based organizations and volunteers dedicated to providing personalized support. This year, GetYourRefund welcomes partners based in 32 states and Washington, D.C.—ensuring that filers have access to accurate and reliable tax help regardless of where they live. Both the GetYourRefund site and filing assistance are available in English and Spanish.

Our fifth year is a big milestone for GetYourRefund—but it also marks a big year for tax filing in general. Our team’s vision has always been government adoption of reforms that make tax filing free and easy for everyone. This year, that vision takes a huge step forward with the launch of IRS Direct File, the first free, public, electronic tax filing tool in US history. The tool will be going live soon for select beta testers, with broad availability later in the filing season. We’re excited to share more in coming weeks about FileYourStateTaxes, our companion state filing tool that integrates with Direct File to support state returns for New York and Arizona taxpayers.

To date, GetYourRefund has helped 154,000 people successfully file their taxes. We’re excited to add to that number in this tax season, getting more households the tax benefits they deserve.
